Dejan Umicevic, golden medalist at 6. World University Championship in karate in Poland, had been chosen for doping control in July 2008. Three weeks later, the test result addressed to Karate Federation of Serbia showed greater concentration of substance DHEA (dehhydroepiandrosterone). DHEA is precursor of testosterone and usual finding in urine specimen. However, great amount of this metabolite indicate possible use of prohibited substances. Because of this finding Karate Federation of Serbia required addition laboratory analysis (IRMS) of urine sample at Institute of Biochemistry in Köln, Germany. That analysis showed endogenous source of DHEA and it explained that greater concentration DHEA is result of physiological production in human body and excluded abuse of doping substances.
