ROME — Jannik Sinner said that he did not want to accept the deal that led to his three-month anti-doping ban, but did so in order to avoid the uncertain verdict of a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“I didn’t want to do it in the beginning, so it was not easy for me to accept it because I knew what really happened,” Sinner said May 5 in his first news conference since his legal team reached the case resolution agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in February. “Sometimes we have to choose the best in a very bad moment.”

Looking tan and rested and with his mop of red hair trimmed, he described his time away from the match court as “three very long months.” He tried to fill the time at the gym and with watching other sports, but much to his frustration, he quickly learned that he was prohibited from attending events in person…
