The Prohibited List (the List) is a document that identifies which substances and methods are prohibited in sport.
The Prohibited List is published and updated by WADA and adopted by the Anti-doping agency of the Republic of Serbia. The List is reviewed every year, and the revised version comes into effect on 1 January each year.
The Prohibited List is the same for all countries worldwide.
The List is divided into three parts: substances and methods prohibited at all times, substances and methods prohibited only in-competition, and substances prohibited only in specific sports.
In competition period
The period commencing at 11:59 p.m. on the day before a competition in which the athlete is scheduled to participate through the end of such competition and the sample collection process related to such competition.
Provided, however, WADA may approve, for a particular sport, an alternative definition if an International Federation provides a compelling justification that a different definition is necessary for its sport; upon such approval by WADA, the alternative definition shall be followed by all Major Event Organizations for that particular sport.
Out of competition period
Any other time that is not in-competition period.
For a substance or method to be included in the Prohibited List it must meet two of the following criteria:
- It enhances or has the potential to enhance sport performance
- It represents an actual or potential health risk to athletes
- It violates the spirit of sport
Some of the substances included on the Prohibited List may also be found in medications used to treat various health conditions.
More information about medications prohibited in sport is available in the section Medications in Sport and TUE.
